Through the newspaper activity, I learned how to both analyze and write a well-structured news story. Breaking down articles into their key components—headline, byline, and the “5 Ws and H” (who, what, when, where, why, and how)—gave me a deeper understanding of what makes a story clear and engaging. The headline taught me how to summarize the most important part of the news in a way that catches attention, while the byline reminded me of the importance of giving credit to the author, establishing accountability and trust. Identifying the “who” and “what” helped me see the importance of focusing on the main actors and events, while the “when” and “where” gave the story context and grounding. Learning the “why” and “how” allowed me to explain the reasons behind events and the process leading up to them. This helped me understand how to write news in a clear, concise, and logical way that informs and engages the reader. Overall, the exercise gave me valuable insight into crafting a complete and impactful news story.
