We did our newspaper activity today where we were supposed to mark 5Ws and 1H in newspaper articles which comes under inverted pyramid style of writing.And also mark the attribution given in those articles.This activity was given to us to enhance our understanding and ability to identify basic components of a news story.We were also given to look through the advertisement in newspaper and classify it as public or government advertisement and private or commercial advertisement.We also counted the number of pages different newspaper had.
We analysed three newspapers namely A,B,C.Newspaper A is comparatively more credible than B and C newspapers while newspaper B has more circulation than both the newspapers.Newspaper C is an exceptional type of newspaper which only included one niche of news that is ‘educational and ranking of different educational institutions and its review’ etc.
Our findings – In newspaper A there were 18 pages and very less advertisement,6 commercial ads and 0 government ads,6 to 7 public notices which ultimately comes under government ads.It can be one of the reasons behind the newspaper’s credibility.
In newspaper B which is a Hindi newspaper, there were 20 pages,12 commercial ads and 4 government advertisements. And also it had public notices.
In newspaper C there were 22 pages, 0 advertisement be it commercial or government but there might be some paid articles regarding review of some educational institutes etc.
We learned a lot from it that it must be very hard to fit ads and articles properly in a newspaper and it also must be an elusive task for editors,copy editors etc. We should read stories of news properly so that we can get the jist of the whole news and we did not misinterpret informations.
