Verification in Journalism- A Crucial Supplement to Healthy News!

Verification is the process of identifying the credible sources of news in order to deliver the truth to the readership. It is one of the most fundamental procedures in journalism for these following reasons:

~To ensure that information received is correct and credible; to check and verify facts, sources, and claims before reporting them ; this ensures that integrity in journalism is maintained and the spread of incorrect information is prevented.

On-the-record This is when information obtained from a source can be attributed to the individual by name. A source is willing to be identified and quoted publicly.

Off-the-record This is when information derived from a source cannot be attributed to that person by name. Sources can remain anonymous. Such is used often if sources fear any repercussions or for the sake of anonymity.

Verification techniques:

Fact checking: Verification of information from other credible sources.
Source verification: Verification of who the source is and the credibility of the source.
Verification of documents: Verification of the genuineness of documents.
Expert Opinion: Opinion sought from experts regarding the subject.
Off-the-record sources may not be as credible, yet in certain sensitive cases it can be very important to obtain, hence journalists have to weigh the need for verification against the ethical imperative of keeping silent.
