Mahatma Gandhi was not only a political leader but also a pioneer in using journalism as a tool for social change. He believed in the power of the written word to educate and inspire the masses.Gandhi was probably the greatest journalist of all time, and the weeklies he ran and edited were probably the greatest weeklies the world as known.He published no advertisement,at the same time he did not want his newspapers to run as a loss.Gandhi edited and published several newspaper, including ‘Youth India’ and ‘Harijan’ through which he communicated his ideas of non-violence, self-reliance and truth.Gandhi was associated with six Journals, for two of which he was editor.
Mahatma Gandhi had strong views on journalism and advertisements including:-
1. Immoral advertisement are wrong- Gandhi believes that it was wrong to use immortal advertisements in newspapers. He thought that newspaper should only accept healthy advertisements and that newspaper editors and proprietors should institute rigid censorship.
2. Truth is important in advertising-Gandhi believed that people, especially in India, treat the printed word in newspapers as gospel truth. He thought that extreme caution was needed drawing up advertisements.
3. Newspapers have the potential to harm society- Gandhi was aware that newspapers could harm if misused.He believed that newspapers become vehicles for profit can lead to serious malpractices like sensationalism and distortion of truth.
