Verifying information is essential in journalism. If something has been formally documented as a direct quote from someone willing to be identified by name as the source of the statement, that claim is on-the-record; if not, it should remain off-the-record. Journalists need to judge the veracity of their sources and be certain where they can say that a story has multiple sources. Verification helps maintain accurate and reliable reporting. Wrong or factually incorrect information has a dominoes effect that leads to inaccuracies, mistakes, withdrawals and tarnishing of the journalist.
