CAMERA CHRONICLES 2: DECODING THE THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY

The second fragment of Camera Chronicles– a Single-Series Photography Event of Juxtapose 2020was organised in the verdant premises of LSR, on February 22nd. A number of aspiring and proficient photographers came together to capture the most impactful scenes from the ubiquities of the college campus using the visual medium.
The theme for the event was ‘Ummeed’, which means ‘Hope’ in English. A multi-dimensional theme at place- ‘Ummeed’ carried with it a sense of sanguinity, optimism, and ample space for escalation to the higher echelons of the greater cosmos.
In the words of Prachi, one of the participants, the theme symbolised the transition from darkness to a lighter world. Another participant, Ritika, saw in the theme a force of transition, one that pushes the world to the fore of progress.
While a number of participants were spotted with equipments to capture the vast, naturally illuminated lawns of LSR, the judge for the event, Mr. Sunil Mishra, emphasised on the essentials of photography in terms of good lighting, composition, and substance. He explained, “The theme of this event is wide in nature and there’s a vast scope for interpretation. It is imperative for all photographers to maintain a balance between creativity and the given theme. ‘Ummeed’, on a personal level, is explanatory of how limited resources can be utilised in the most judicious manner to transform lives.”
The winning entry belonged to Prachi Dureja of Janki Devi Memorial College. The winner had artistically depicted a girl stooped to her knees, apparently distressed, being offered a branch of hope from a sunlit area.
The event was one of the most successful at the two-day Academic Meet and offered a vital piece of creative education and an empirical glimpse of the photographical lens, not just to the participants, but to all the members of the Department of Journalism.
OPEN MIC:
“Khwaab Achha Bura Dono Dikhaate Hain, Magar Ye Humpe Hai Ki Hum Usko Hakeekat Kaise Banaate Hain”

Open Mic, a live poetry, comedy and music-based event, was organized in Lady Shri Ram College for Women, as a part of the Journalism Department’s Annual Academic Meet—Juxtapose.
The competition started with the general introduction of the event, the theme and its relevance, followed by the welcoming of the judge, Ms. Shilpa Sharma and all the participants. The participants were open to perform and speak on the given theme:
“Khwab: Haafiza ya Hakeekat?”
The contestants had distinct and unique interpretations of the given theme. The speakers used several metaphors and satirical remarks to highlight social issues such as male rape, harassment of women, poverty and the perspectives of a middle class person. They also used soul-stirring lines that gobsmacked the audience and some also spoke on love and life.
The competition also had a stand-up comedian who left the audience in chortles with his performance. He cleverly brought in a political perspective and spoke about the “lack of dreams and aspirations in one’s life” in a hilarious way. Another significant piece was a poem on “Male Rape.” The performer used poignant and heart-rending phrases that led to a silence in the room for a while and touched the hearts of all. One of the participants also exhibited a poem on “the pain felt upon being away from home” which left the audience in awe and instilled in them an urge to be with their families.
After all the performances were done, the results were announced and Aman Singh from Jamia Milia Islamia bagged the First prize for his exceptional recitation on “Male Rape.” The Second prize was won by Shubham Kumar from Shaheed Bhagat Singh for his phenomenal poetry on “The Pain of Being Away From Home,” and the Third prize was bagged by Utkarsh Tripathi of Zakir Hussain College.
AN EVOLUTIONARY DISCOURSE AT PANEL DISCUSSION 2

The Department of Journalism as a constituent of its Annual Academic Meet—Juxtapose, brought together a conglomeration of enriching voices for its Panel Discussion on the theme- “The Evolving Paradigms of Modern Day Media Coverage” on February 22, 2020.
To shed some light on the same, Ms. Kaveree Bamzai and Ms. Ruhi Kandhari were invited for a Panel Discussion that was moderated by Ms. Neha Mathews in the college campus.
In her opening comments as the moderator of the discussion, Ms. Mathews introduced the panelists and highlighted their strides in the field of journalism. She then accelerated the discussion by posing a question to Ms. Bamzai about the changes in the practice of journalism from the 90’s to the contemporary world, to which she retorted, “The way news today is being covered has completely changed.” She continued, “Stories concerning people fail to get sustained coverage, and the journalists have forgotten the rudimentary journalistic values.” She also talked about the rise of ‘Blitzkrieg’ Journalism.
The moderator of the discussion further moved on to emphasize on the evolution of media by medium of transmission, from traditional print to the digital world, and in this light, bemoaned the rise of a post-truth world. She asked budding journalists to lay utmost importance on facts and truth, while also highlighting the cardinal principles of objectivity and anonymity while reporting volatile stories.
Ms. Kandhari talked at length about the role of reporters to provide readers with the most essential and informative stories while maintaining integrity and avoiding sensationalism and fear-mongering. She was quick to mention how not every deprived community is financially scant, thus all perspectives need to be accounted for. An experienced journalist and a writer by profession, Ms. Kandhari also suggested everyone to focus on quality journalism, and to create their own beats and carve specialized niches for their reportage.
Ms. Bamzai brought to the fore the distinction between the elite and the ‘Mofussil voice’ which continued to dominate the Political Beat for long.
Responding to an interjection raised by a student on growing domination of the elite news reporters, she pointed out the existence of deep seated polarization at all levels of the society.
The essence of the discussion revolved around the need for budding journalists to find their voices and amplify them at varied levels with full expression and honesty.
The enriching session ended on a point of collective transformation with a rush of hopefulness, positivity and good vibes. Ms. Bamzai remarked, “I came here with a cynical head, but shall be returning with ample positivity about the profession in particular and the world in general!”

IS THE INFORMATION WE POST ONLINE REALLY SECURE AND PROTECTED?

A debate competition was held as a part of the Journalism Department’s Annual Academic Meet—Juxtapose on February 22nd.
The theme of this year’s Vox Pop: the Annual Turncoat Debate was:
“Digital Media Platform Live up To Their Promise of Data Security.”
The competition was judged by Ms. Chandni, who is an Alumni of LSR, and by Ms. Priyanka, who is pursuing her PHD from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The event started with an introduction of the theme and the speakers began expressing their views for and against the motion.
“Cyber security issues are becoming a day-to-day struggle. A study stated that an account is hacked every thirty seconds,” said Krishna Joshi from LSR in disapproval of the theme. “Social media was never safe in the past and will never be in the future,” another participant said.
Data hacking, according to participants who were against the motion, happens because the users are negligent and not vigilant, and they provide their personal information such as date of birth, address and mobile number without any verification. All our biometric information is uploaded on the internet which leads to phishing, hacking, identity theft etc.
Participants in support of the theme mentioned that firewalls, password security, two-factor authentication, use of captcha and OTP are very common for secure transactions which make the digital world safe.
“It’s very hilarious that when someone follows you on Instagram, you are happy and comfortable but when someone follows you in real life, it makes you uncomfortable!”-this statement put forth by a participant received a lot of consideration and attention.
At the end of the event and after hearing all the views put forth, the judges gave feedbacks and announced the results.
Krishna Joshi from LSR bagged the First position; Vaibhav Garg of Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology came Second; and Utkarsh Tripathi from Zakir Hussain college won the Third prize.
It was an interactive, informative and a constructive session, wherein everyone got to express what they feel and believe in!
MEDIA QUIZ
“The ultimate expedition for awareness at the mercy of the mighty buzzer”

The Department of Journalism of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, in collaboration with the Quiz Society, organised the Media Quiz as a part of their Annual Academic Meet— Juxtapose on February 22nd. Instilling in all a stimulating quest of knowledge and intellect, it rightly holds the reputation of being one of most awaited inter-college quizzes.
The Quiz Experts for the event were Ria Chopra and Gayatri Giri.
The quiz was divided into two parts- a preliminary round and a final round. The students participated in teams of two for and answered the questions put forth by the Quiz Experts. Participants engaged in the grueling Preliminary Round which consisted of questions covering a multitude of topics such as dance styles, identifying celebrities, video games, music albums, and movies.
The teams that made it to the Final Round of the quiz were extremely thrilled as each of them were a step closer to the victory and had just one last chance to achieve the ultimate quizzing glory. The questions included direct, visual and audio cues and were based on award shows, movies, television shows, online streaming applications, pop references and many more!
The quiz was the perfect combination of pace, entertainment and erudition.
The event concluded with the declaration of the results and three winning teams were chosen. The team that stood First consisted of Adil and Munavvir, the Second prize was bagged by Gokul and Vallar, and the Third position was awarded to Sathvik and Pravar.
