Journalism Course Report
Eight Months at Lady Shri Ram College
Over the past eight months, I have had the privilege of attending a comprehensive journalism course at Lady Shri Ram College. This course has provided me with a solid foundation in various aspects of journalism, ranging from the ingredients of news to the sociology of news.
One of the fundamental lessons I gained from the course was understanding the ingredients of news. News articles should be timely, relevant, and significant to the intended audience. The importance of accuracy, objectivity, and fairness in reporting. I also learned about the negative impact of yellow journalism. I learned that sensationalism, exaggeration, and distortion of facts can compromise the integrity of news reporting. The course also covered the principles of writing for different media platforms. The techniques and styles of writing vary in print , online and broadcast . I learned how to adapt my writing to suit the requirements and constraints of each medium, while still maintaining clarity and engaging the audience effectively. The course provided insights into the functioning of newsrooms and media organisations . It also emphasised on the key role of reporters in gathering information, conducting interviews, and presenting news stories. I learned the qualities required to be a successful reporter, such as being curious, tenacious, and ethical. The importance of building trust with sources and maintaining journalistic integrity were emphasised .Along with that now i am aware about how Sub-editors play a crucial role in fact-checking, copy-editing, and ensuring the overall quality of news content. The course delved into the sociology of news and how news media can shape public perception. I learned about the influence of cultural, political, and economic factors on news production and consumption. Understanding these dynamics is essential to critically analyse media representations and identify biases. As part of the course, I learned how to conduct interviews effectively. I had the opportunity to put my skills into practice by interviewing our senior, Jaisila Bajaj. This exercise enabled me to develop my communication skills, listening skills, and the art of asking insightful questions.Attending the journalism course at Lady Shri Ram College has been an enriching experience.
