From Classroom to Newsroom: A Year of Journalistic Discovery and Skill-Building
7th July 2023, marks the end of the first year for the batch of 2025/26.The past 8 months have culminated in a plethora of learning, giving students first hand experience at the trials and tribulations of college life ,but also paving the way for the road ahead.
The Department of Journalism has always strived to give its students hands on experience to supplement the theoretical learnings in class. Two major core papers for the Department this year were Introduction to Journalism and Reporting and Editing for Print. Both these papers delve into the realm of journalism and its various practices.Introduction to Journalism, gave the department, their first look into this field, explaining several basic terminologies of the industry and also glanced upon the emerging trends in this space.Studying the paper gave us an insight into how news is selected and ultimately presented to the public and touched upon topics such as sensationalism, fake news and yellow journalism.
Reporting and Editing for Print ,taught in the second semester took us through various beats and aimed to enhance our interviewing and editing skills ,thereby supplementing the theoretical base of the first semester. Both these papers enabled students , to analyse the content of newspapers and be able to design them , as well as gain a deeper understanding of journalistic practices and ethics. The importance of global and national news agencies and the role that they play in the dissemination of news right to the local level ,gave us a comprehensive look into the world of journalism and information dissemination.
