“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” – William Butler Yeats

As I stepped foot into Lady Shri Ram College for Women, I was filled with anticipation for the new chapter ahead. Opting for Journalism Honours turned out to be a brilliant decision and has been the highlight of my academic journey. From the very beginning, I found myself understanding news, it’s meaning, ingredients and nature. Our first task for our core paper- Introduction to Journalism was to make a ‘Newsletter’. It was a group activity and our topic was ‘cinema’. We named it “Karwaan” which means ‘Journey through the ages’. I learnt the essence of a group and how one can achieve excellence through unity. Furthermore, our Department Head and Professor Dr. Vartika Nanda taught us what true Journalism is about. She taught us to bear journalistic ethics in each sphere of our lives and to do good for the society as a young journalist. I not only learnt about yellow journalism, sensationalism, it’s practice and history but also how it is a dearth for true journalism and to never practice it.

As I stepped into Semester ||, a new wave of opportunity and learning bestowed on me. I learnt how to report, its types, journalistic ethics and different types of beats like health, education, sports and crime. I also worked in preparing various research papers and my Professor further honed my skills. We were also given practical task such as “interviewing”. I interviewed my former senior of my department, ‘Jaisila Bajaj’ and ‘Dr Sunita Roy Chowdhury’. Both these experiences refined my interview skills. We also made a newspaper which was a group activity, named as ‘Delhi Dastak’.

My experience at LSR was not overwhelming but was also enveloped with love and warmth. I received correction, understanding, skills and compassion from my Professor. I learnt the importance of working in a group.
And lastly, I learnt what true journalism is about. It’s about accuracy, authenticity, simplicity, honesty as well as understanding, compassion and love for one’s society.
