In the first two semesters of college, we have the paper – Introduction to Journalism and Reporting and Editing for newspaper. In which we learnt about basic components of news and newspapers, ingredients of news, types of news- hard news and soft news, yellow journalism, penny press, ethics in journalism, citizen journalism, sources of news etc. We also learnt about the journalistic skills like inverted pyramid structure for writing in newspapers, principles of news selection, criteria for news worthiness and crafting and structuring the news story in Journalism. Apart from that, we also did some activities like newsletter making and research work for various topics which helped us in gaining knowledge in research methodology in journalism.
We gain conceptual and theoretical Knowledge of Journalism and learnt to think critically about issues and topics of the subject. We learnt to use research- based information collected to provide valid and cogent conclusions and examined different mediums for presenting news, such as print, online, broadcast, and multimedia formats. This includes understanding headline writing, caption writing, and the use of visuals in storytelling.
Reporting and Editing for News builds upon the foundation provided in the introductory course and focuses on the practical aspects of reporting and editing news content. we learnt about reporter roles and qualities, beats, interviewing skills , fake news, paid news and structure of news organisation and news agencies. We learnt to cover and write balanced reports through objectivity, accuracy, and brevity and understand the duties and qualities of a responsible reporter. We also interviewed and made newspapers and highlighted various components of newspapers- headlines, captions, hard news, soft news, neutrality and bias in news etc. It helped us in developing skills in writing news stories that are accurate, concise, and well-structured. It also included editing skills, such as copyediting and proofreading. It deepened our understanding of legal and ethical challenges specific to reporting and editing news, including conflicts of interest, sourcing, privacy, and digital ethics.
