Antara Majumdar
My parents, Soma and Abhijeet, talk about radio quite excitedly. We don’t listen to radio at all, except sometime while driving, but it seems that it was a big part of their lives when they were growing up. My mom talks about listening to radio programmes on a regular basis, and bhoole bisre geet (playing old hindi film songs). Another favourite of hers was a programme that played songs at request of defence personnel stationed across far flung areas, along with their names. Being from an air Force family, this was special. There were also programmes for farmers, for women, for children, as well as things like classical music, urdu shayari, english quiz and current affairs programmes, and even book reviews, literally something for everyone! Both my parents have wistful memories of Akashvani and miss the quietude and peace that came with it.
