All India Radio,( Akashwani) , has been an integral part of my family’s life for generations. My parents and grandparents have always held a deep appreciation for the service it provided. In their time, Akashwani was not just a source of entertainment but also a primary medium for staying informed and connected with the world. They relied on Akashwani for the latest news updates, cultural programs, and soothing music. grandparents were born in an era when TV was not even a concept. It was their window to the world. Having a radio was also a matter of pride at that time. They gathered around the radio to listen to legendary figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru during critical occasions in India. During those turbulent times, the radio was more than simply a source of information; it was also a symbol of unity and optimism.
For my parents, Akashwani continued to play a central role in their lives.Although CRT TVs came into picture by then but people had limited access. The radio was their primary source of news, and they relied on it for accurate and timely information.During major events like elections or national crises, Akashwani was the trusted source that provided updates and analysis,
Cricket enthusiasts like my father fondly remember tuning in for live commentary even before the match started . The descriptions painted by cricket commentators made him feel as if he was sitting in the stadium. He also remembers listening to different programmes that aired in those days like ‘jaimala’, ‘Hawamahal’, ‘Inse Miliye’, ‘Sangeet Sarita’, ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’, ‘Chitralok’, ‘Chhayageet’ are a few to name.
Today, as we navigate a world filled with a multitude of media options, Akashwani’s role has shifted but remains significant. It continues to provide a reliable source of news, cultural enrichment, and entertainment.Akashwani is more than just a radio service; it’s a bridge across generations, connecting us to our past, our culture, and our nation’s history.
