From the 1950’s when only 10% of the American population had a TV set to the present times where most households even in the corner of the world own a TV, it has become conventional wisdom that television, in general, and higher exposure to television, in particular, hurts children’s cognitive development and contributes to the dumbing down of the masses and there is a genuine level of truth to it.
This sedentary activity kills your imagination with the rush of stimuli and dopamine, causing you to become an addict. It’s true for children and adults alike. We like the pleasure of not having to push ourselves and just absorb information thrown to our faces rather than processing and actively interacting which surely also cuts back on our time to be physically active posing adversity at a whole different level. The even dangerous part is that soon television becomes a trusted entity and we can be easily manipulated by it, forced into a pattern of thinking because of that very content that numbs our brain and gives us pleasure.
Television as an idiot box might be that friend with whom we’ll jump off of the cliff if asked.
