To intrigue and entice the readers, a news story’s lead must be well crafted and contextualized. A lead is the beginning paragraph that constitutes of the most important elements of a news story, generally inclusive of the 5 Ws and H. A lead that is well written and conveys the relevance, significance or urgency of a news event in a conspicuous and eye-catching way, will result in better coverage and interest. It is the handshake between the message to be imparted and the reader’s cognition. It almost acts like a hook that grabs onto the reader’s eyes through suspense, curiosity, questions or sensation. The ABCs of Journalism i.e. Accuracy, Brevity and Clarity are elemental aspects of the lead of a news story.
