A lead is an opening paragraph that gives the audience the most important information of the news story in a concise and clear manner, while still maintaining the readers’ interest. It answers the 5Ws and 1H of the news story. The impact of a lead on the reader’s minds is usually the deciding factor of whether or not one will spend their precious time by indulging in the whole story. Like a magnet, its job is to attract the reader and create a curiosity for them to follow. The lead is vital for capturing the reader’s interest immediately. In a fast-paced media environment, a compelling lead ensures that the audience is drawn into the story from the start and helps readers quickly understand the core elements of the story. Thus, it acts as a hook, generating curiosity and prompting the audience to explore the details of the story.
