Television remains a significant medium of communication in today’s world despite the continuous speedy growth of digital media.It gives us the unique combination of real time news, entertainment and educational content which is accessible to a broad audience. Moreover, television’s broad reach makes it influential tool for advertisers and public service campaign.We now have plethora of good and bad content available in front of us.The decision is ours what to choose.
•Television in today’s India – India has seen a dramatic rise in television programmes since the onset of liberalisation policy in Indian economy.Most of the middle class citizens of India nowadays consume news directly through television shows or news channels.Though the situation is now changing with the rising popularity of digital platforms ,it still is the prominent source of recieving news and information.
Because of its ability to create powerful touchstones, TV enables young people to share cultural experiences with others.But news channels nowadays can be seen reporting on communal news extensively which in return damage the social fabric of our country.Rising sensationalism in television media raise questions about its credibility.Even the private news channels of our country are seen propagating fake news without cross checking it.These all are leading in decreasing credibility of news channels due to which many people have discontinued watching TV.
•Potential of TV in changing society – TV is that powerful tool through which we can shape public opinion in good or in a bad way.When it comes to the potential of TV ,it is huge.Educational programme in television can change the perception of public regarding entrenched belief of patriarchy, misogyny and dowry system etc.Indian society needs urgent reforms regarding gender sensitivity,lack of financial literacy or media literacy .TV is that tool which holds potential to change the world as it aspires.But what is needed is the replacement of communal and sensational news by rich educational content. The precondition to all these changes is the change in the working of television media itself.
•Threat to the popularity of television – The rising use of internet or digital media in consuming news can pose a threat to the very existence of television.The generation of today prefers recieving information through digital platforms or credible medium.As the tv loosing its credibility or trustworthiness,the platform like YouTube is rising because it gives people freedom to express themselves and also it is a herculean task to censor social media.The people nowadays started believing more on social media influencers than broadcasters.
