Relevance of Television
“When television is good, nothing is better
When it’s bad, nothing is worse.”
This quote by Newton N. Minow very accurately depicts the worldwide perception of television. Television as a medium, revolutionised the world in unimaginable ways. But it is very important to discuss the initial function of television. It was invented so that it could be used as a medium to impart education to the world. And yet, many call television the doom of human mind and creativity, a device that slowly and extensively, rots the human brain.
But what about the relevance of television? Television has undergone numerous phases and a total evolution from satellite and black and white TV, to colour TV, LCDs and now Smart TVs. In every phase, it underwent a change in function but never lost relevance due to its adaptability. Now, our phones also play the role of a television screen and while that certainly seems like a more attractive proposition , the experience of watching our favourite films and shows on the television screen can certainly not be replaced.
Television in today’s day has evolved from a socialist initiative of educating the world to a capitalist advertising hub and an entertainment centre. And maybe this is why it has faced significant criticism. Because apparently it ‘dulls our mind and hinders imagination,’but I also believe it opens our eyes to a new world, it shows us what “could be” and it opens up alternate avenues of gaining knowledge . Television as a medium cannot be disregarded or discarded. Its longevity is a testament to its evolution , and its content and adaptability drive its growth.
