Do you remember waking up early on Sundays to watch your favorite cartoons,
only to hear our mothers shouting at us to get ready? How times have changed.
Today, we often see kids glued to their mobile screens. Despite this shift,
television—once labeled the “idiot box”—has always played a significant role in
our lives.
When television first arrived in India in the late 1950s, it was a rare luxury with
only one channel, Doordarshan, available for a long time. Gradually, television
evolved, becoming an integral part of daily life by offering various channels that
catered to news, entertainment, and education. Over time, it has shaped
societal values and served as a primary medium for news dissemination.
In today’s digital era, there has been a noticeable shift from traditional cable TV
to smart TVs, which offer internet connectivity and access to OTT platforms like
Netflix Amazon Prime, etc. However, TV news channels still remain widely
viewed, especially during major events like elections or national crises.
Television also has the unique ability to bring people together, whether during
elections or an iconic India vs. Pakistan cricket match. Thus, even in a digital
age, television continues to be a significant medium in our lives.
