Radio is a form of mass media that uses radio waves to transmit sound and communicate information. It has been a very popular form of communication in households and continues to be widely used in cars, with a significant number of listeners. Radio broadcasting in India began in 1923 with the first broadcast by the Radio Club of Bombay, which was renamed Akashvani in 1957. It allows for live broadcasting and real-time interaction with audiences, making it engaging and interesting. It has been an effective medium for spreading awareness and information in local languages, surpassing linguistic boundaries. Radio is accessible in rural areas where internet connectivity and literacy may be minimal. In small communities, it provides an outlet for regular community messaging and activities such as local sports, community events, special events, and local business advertising. Setting up and maintaining radio stations is generally less expensive than other forms of media like television or online streaming, making it a cost-effective option.
