Relevance of Radio
Just beside my bus stop was a very old tiny fruit shop, barely put together by bricks and mortar with a temporary thin tin shed. Older than the shop was “Anna” the man who owned it. He was so old that I couldn’t even count the wrinkles on his face! And older than him was the small rustic device with a long antenna that was always with him his confidant his “Radio”. Every morning at the bus stop I saw him listening to the news, when I came back from school I saw him humming the old melodies and in the evening he tucked away his old friend in his cycle’s basket listening to all his stories while pedalling back home. Radio has always been more than a medium of communication; it is an emotion that liberates and connects the entire nation. Despite the availability of technology, televisions, laptops and hundred other modes of communication radio carries a quality of comfort and nostalgia for its listeners that allows people to enjoy the content at their own pace and process the information at a deeper level. Moreover it carries the power of reaching even the remotest areas of the country serving as the only medium of communication and entertainment in many tier three cities of the country. Community radio has proved to be extremely helpful in locating people in natural disasters and saving lives. Radio will always carry the old charm of being a beautiful memory for the older generation and an instrument of learning and knowledge for the younger one proving that a timeless legacy is always relevant.
