Reporting and Editing for Print
Continuous Assessment
It has been around eight months since I joined Lady Shri Ram College for Women – Delhi University. I am pursuing Journalism which is a professional course offered in only 7 colleges of Delhi University. LSR, being the best for journalism, was always the college that I wanted. My experience till now has been great. I have learnt a lot of things here. The Department of Journalism and its faculty has helped me to see things with a journalistic approach. I still remember my first class with Dr. Vartika Nanda where she told us that journalism is not about sensationalizing the news or gaining TRPs, it’s about the duty you have as a journalist to provide correct news to the world, doing something for the social cause and being ethical in what you do.
In my first semester, I studied “Introduction to Journalism” which helped me to understand some key components of journalism which are basic yet very important. There were topics like Ingredients of news, hard news vs. soft news, attribution, balance, brevity, news worthiness, etc. Before learning these aspects, news for me was just a piece of information. But after learnt the basics of journalism, my perspective of reading news has been changed. My focus, while reading news, is on the components used to make that news worth reading.
The second semester was about how to report and edit for print where I learnt about covering of different beats, news agencies, interviewing skills, sociology of news, fake news, neutrality, etc.
The second semester has a lot of practical component as compared to the first semester. We were asked to form a group and interview a person. There was another practical where we had to make a newspaper and mark the components of news. These activites helped to understand the topics better.
The overall experience in college till now has been great.
