Ariana Huffington once said “”Journalism is about telling the truth. If we lose that, we lose our credibility, and we lose our audience.”

And that stands absolutely true today. In the fast-paced world of newsrooms, credibility is everything. It is the foundation upon which a journalist’s reputation is built, and is absolutely essential for maintaining the trust of the public.
However, the credibility of newsrooms has been on a steady decline in recent years, largely due to a variety of factors like fake news, confirmation bias, and social media echo chambers which have all contributed to a growing mistrust of traditional media outlets.
The increasing polarisation of society has also had an impact on the credibility of newsrooms. With people increasingly consuming media that aligns with their own beliefs, it has become more difficult for journalists to present unbiased as well as objective coverage. In India, the decline in credibility of newsrooms has been particularly acute, with a proliferation of partisan news outlets and misinformation spreading on social media platforms.
To address this issue, journalists worldwide must take a more proactive approach to fact-checking and verification, and strive to present a balanced, nuanced perspective on complex issues, working in the interest of the nation and world at large, and not only longing for profits. Because at the end of the day, it is the ethical part of journalism that the world of today craves the most.
