KOPAL PORWAL
Gandhiji’s contributions as a journalist are lesser-known. Over four decades, he was involved with at least six newspapers as a journalist and editor. He believed that newspapers should serve educational purposes rather than profit-making and wrote in simple language to reach the masses. Gandhiji opposed commercial advertisements, advocating instead for public service ads. He insisted on publishing only verified content and was willing to wait for facts to be established before reporting. His journalism promoted peace and development, reflecting his principles of ‘Satyagraha’. He strongly stood against untouchability and injustice towards women. Scholars have defined his journalistic approach as Gandhian Journalism, which they further categorized into Public Journalism, Peace Journalism, Development Journalism, and Journalistic Ethics based on his values.
