“Journalism should never be prostituted for selfish ends or for the sake of merely earning livelihood or, worse still, for amassing money” – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
Today, 2nd October, we celebrate the birth of the father of our nation,Mahatma Gandhi, who not only led India’s freedom movement but also left a mark in journalism. Gandhi’s approach to journalism was unique, as he believed that “the sole aim of journalism should be service.” He started several newspapers, like Young India, Navjivan, and Harijan, which were focused on educating the public about Satyagraha, untouchability, and rural poverty.
However,Gandhi’s publications were different from that of the rest as he strictly opposed advertisements. He believed that newspapers should serve public welfare, not profit. For him, using newspapers to earn a living or generate profits could lead to serious malpractices and divert from their true purpose. Thus,Gandhi’s journals remained free from commercial influences, and maintained their focus on social upliftment and moral values.
