RELEVANCE OF TELEVISION
“ So please, oh please, we beg, we pray
Go throw your TV set away” – Roald Dahl
The confusion and conflict that these words erupted in my mind as I read them for the first time is ineffable. The old television set in my living room had always seemed like an old family friend, so to hear the sheer existence of television berated was like a jab straight to the heart. .
The world as we know it today would’ve looked very different without television playing its part in influencing culture. Imagining a childhood without Mickey Mouse or Golmaal seems alien now.
The role of television in information dissemination still reigns supreme. By providing real time updates on current affairs, weather and emergencies, television is a portal for many to stay informed. The 9 pm news is the daily dose of “worldly knowledge” for many (mostly dads)
Entertainment, escapism and education are all options available. With the touch of a button you could be transported to Madagascar, a laboratory or a newsroom, the opportunities are endless!
Whether you have 3 Televisions in a single house or a single TV in an entire mohalla, TV will end up becoming the beacon of community.
Watching my family gather around our TV is testament enough for its relevance. Eventually I decided that maybe Roald Dahl never learned to turn the TV on! .
