Newspapers are the backbone of the print industry, serving as a crucial method for dissemination of information. Thus, understanding the newspapers and going beyond superficial layers is of utmost importance. On 27th September 2024, the students of the department of journalism were given an assignment to better familiarise themselves with various aspects of newspapers.
The following observations were made by me during this activity:
1. Newspaper 1 had approximately 21 advertisements spread over it’s 8 pages, pointing towards its sponsorships. It also illustrated 3 government campaigns.
2. Newspaper 2 showed a stark contrast as it barely dedicated space to advertisements. Spanning over 24 pages, this newspaper only had 6 advertisements.
3. Newspaper 3 showed similarlity to the its first competitor and had approximately 25 advertisements.
I also analysed various beats of the newspaper, classifying articles into when, where, who, why and how based on the subject of their content.
Thus this activity enlightened me towards the various motivating forces behind each article and newspaper.
