‘DOORDARSHAN’ itself holds so much nostalgia for most of us. In earlier times when there were only a few channels and people didn’t have a lot of options Doordarshan came to rescue as it was the only broadcasting channel back then. It had it all for every age group from news, children shows, serials etc. With the emergence of various new channels and OTT platforms Doordarshan somehow lost its appeal. To understand it well I asked my father about his memories of Doordarshan and when he narrated the stories I could clearly tell that it was more than just a channel for them. Those were the times when not every household had a television and everyone gathered at the same place to watch shows like Krishidarshan, Chitrahaar, Buniyaad, Ramayan, Mahabharat, news, sports, etc. It was a major factor contributing in bringing people of various communities together. It encouraged unity among people. But now that television can be found in every household this practice has somehow disappeared and people have gotten so busy in their lives that, forget watching television with others they don’t even have time to sit and watch television with their own family members. But this took a drastic change when COVID-19 came into our lives and everyone was locked up in their houses and then came the re-emergence of Ramayan and Mahabharat on Doordarshan and that was the time when my family watched these shows together it became a ritual for us those days . I remember how my grandfather and my parents got nostalgic while watching these programmes and told us stories from their time about how Doordarshan was such an integral part of their lives and that for them was “ MAGIC OF DOORDARSHAN”.
