When there was nothing, there was Doordarshan. When I asked my parents about the relevance of Doordarshan in their lives, they had nothing but the fondest memories of it, of whole families culminating in a small crowded room in front of the small TV watching whatever Doordarshan had to offer due to lack of choices, some of the prominent shows being the epic series of Ramayana, The stories of Byomkesh Bakshi and others. It was the sole source of information, on recent developments and most importantly it was untampered with. Its sole motto was mass communication rather than profit or competition which still holds true even in today’s date. Even though the number of viewers of Doordarshan have decreased over time. Its trust and quality of news still remains the same.
