“The sole aim of journalism should be service” , Mahatma Gandhi’s approach towards journalism was free from ambitions through newspapers and media he wanted to serve the society and work for the masses. During his lifetime, Gandhiji ran four publications — Indian Opinion, Young India, Navajivan and Harijan and all of his publications showed his true devotion for the people. Gandhi advocated for a focus on ethical and social responsibility which should be a core element in journalism.
He believed that ‘advertisements’ often perpetuated materialism and misled the public, encouraging unnecessary consumption of news and data which is not beneficial to the masses. Gandhi argued that newspapers should prioritize truth and ethical reporting over commercial interests as he himself never published an advertisements in any of his newspapers.
