Our Introduction to Journalism professor gave us an exciting opportunity to work on a newsletter. In my opinion, this was a hugely beneficial introduction to the world of print media (for students of journalism). It gave me a working knowledge of how to produce attractive publications and how to tailor them to a particular target audience using colour, text placement, typography and images. I gained a rather deep understanding of the fact that newspapers, like many other creative products, require a combination of attractive design and usability to succeed. Having only one or the other will result in products that aren’t appealing to use or will end up frustrating users. The design of newspapers can influence readers to pick up one copy over another or cause readers to switch to other publishers and mediums. This exercise was also important because it gave me a chance to improve my leadership and team work skills. It gave me a rough idea of how the actual division of labour works in newspaper publications. To sum it up, it was an extremely educative and pragmatic exercise.
