The renaming superbug has been around for quite a while now. Sweet ol’ Bombay became Mumbai, Madras into Chennai, Calcutta into Kolkata and Trivandrum into a tongue twister Thiruvananthapuram.
But my lament is, why it has missed obvious targets. I will come back on that because the pain in my heart goes much beyond that.
What does TV now offer more than what the TV of yore offered? While occupying lesser space, we can put our finger on ‘the experience’.
In a way TV is just competing with itself. Just that there is a catch and it makes the fight for survival of the traditional TV existential. It fixes you to one place. If the TV is grotesque and the experience wild, maybe it might hook coming generations for a few minutes. It has a deep rival in a gadget that, while sitting in front of the TV gives access to multiple other non-TV threads. Television is just another brick in the wall about to collapse.
Television would only become relevant if it develops legs and chases the viewers.
The superbug is hovering around an esteemed institution in Poona. Oops! Pune. Well it has to be renamed very soon in near future. Which institution, did you say. Come on, your guess is better than mine.
