Having born in a generation where television had already taken over people’s life, I did not have a chance to listen to radio much. However, I have often heard stories from my dad which he would very fondly recite, as how people in his childhood would circle around a single radio set, constantly fixing the antenna to get a better clarity of the speaker’s voice and listen to the news updates being given. He would get overwhelemed talking about the 1983 cricket world cup final commentary and how the win was followed by a huge celebration all around the nation. I try to see the radio era through his eyes and it fills we with wonders thinking about how it felt like to make sense of things by only listening to them, and not having any visuals to accompany it. The only way I have correlated with radio is when there was no internet and in order to listen to the latest bollywood songs, I would switch to the mobile phone’s radio and would even try to record it. In the process, I have heard news being read out on the radio a few times but as someone who had always watched news with visual effects, I didnt find radio news to be much appealing.
