1923 marked the beginning of a new era in broadcasting by introducing the Radio Club of Bombay to the country. Prior to this, newspapers like Mooknayak and Amrita Bazaar Patrika were on the rise, but the way the radio came, he took the general masses with a surprise. Coming back to me, I think radio was an important factor while growing up in the cantonment area. Each house in the area had two speakers installed in it for radio broadcasting. Mohammad Rafi’s songs or the news bulletin that would air on Akashvani during the morning hours would be our alarm before going to school. Over time, the morning routine transformed from waking up to the sounds of news bulletins and music in a more commercial manner on the radio during bus rides to school. The way commercial radio stations like 98.3 Mirchi began playing English songs and commercial dance numbers altered the entire concept of radio broadcasting. Listening to advertisements on privately owned channels was a way for us to wait for the songs. Ultimately, this ended due to the introduction of digital broadcasting space and music platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Gaana. Although I no longer listen to the radio, I wish I could go back when news bulletins on radios were more reliable than on television.
