In the beginning of the first semester the students were introduced to the concept and the field of journalism through the subject “Introduction to Journalism”. It incorporated topics required for developing the basics of journalism such as hard news, soft news, fake news, attribution, yellow journalism, verification, penny press, Ingredients of news etc.
The students were given many opportunities to research on various topics from the syllabus resulting in the refinement of our researching skills. In the middle of the first semester,
we were given an assignment to make newsletters in groups and a variety of such activities which allowed for many experiences of working in groups. It improved our interpersonal skills and gave us a chance to bond with our classmates.
Along with the theoretical components there were a number of practical activities to increase the practical knowledge of the students.
The second semester classes were kicked off with an insightful guest lecture from an alumnus. The syllabus was covered in a way in which the students were allotted topics to be researched on. The research document of every student was then discussed in class to provide a better understanding of the concept to everyone. These activities were beneficial in order for the whole class to discuss the concepts and make notes of it. A practical assignment in which a DIY newspaper had to be made in groups, allowed the students to look at the details of newspapers and learn new things about them in a whole new light.
Throughout the semester, the students were given the opportunities to attend a number of guest lectures for the subject which were knowledgeable and helpful in order to learn the concepts in detail.
Towards the end of both the semesters an assignment was given to make notes on the topics from the syllabus which helped in remembering the concepts before the exams.
Personally, the practical activities and the practice of researching topics to be discussed in classes gave me a chance to increase my confidence at working with people, talking about my ideas, and having discussions with people.
I got the chance to look at things with a new perspective.
