“One should possess a keen instinct for identifying, selecting, and reporting news in order to excel as a competent journalist.” Journalism is a field that commands great respect, but it also entails numerous challenges. It necessitates upholding the principles of ethical journalism and adhering to journalistic standards.
Over the past eight months, we have delved into two papers taught by Dr. Vartika Nanda Ma’am, namely ‘Introduction to Journalism’ and ‘Reporting, Printing, and Editing.’ These papers provided us with valuable insights into the field of journalism.
We began with the fundamentals, such as comprehending the various components of newspapers, including different types of headlines, bylines, credit lines, and datelines. We also explored the significance and impact of diverse types of leads. Additionally, we examined various forms of journalism practiced throughout history, ranging from tabloid journalism to sensational journalism. We further explored different types of news, such as hard news and soft news.
In this particular paper, we are diving deeper into the subjects of news agencies (news gathering), sensational news, and the ethical responsibilities of journalists while reporting. We also investigate the role of media in court trials, connecting it more closely to real-life scenarios and facilitating our continuous learning.
In our pursuit of knowledge, we conducted an interview as part of this paper. Journalism is a field that necessitates hands-on experience and practical application. Our teacher has been instrumental in assisting us in acquiring practical knowledge. Throughout the past eight months, we have produced two newsletters. Our teacher ensures that we put theory into practice, engaging in various classroom activities that enhance our understanding of the subject matter and foster strong bonds with our peers.
These past eight months have been a tremendous learning experience for me. We have acquired an abundance of knowledge, not only from the subject matter itself but also from the guidance provided by our teacher. Our learning extends far beyond the confines of the classroom, enabling us to explore the practicality of journalism in various aspects of life.
