A crucial part of being a reporter is to understand and fulfil the responsibilities that comes with this role. A skill set is also needed for efficiently fulfilling these responsibilities. A reporter has responsibilities towards the reader and the society. It beginds with the search for truth and disseminating it with accuracy and sensitivity. Whether it’s rooting out corruption at different levels or bringing out injustice in society, a reporter needs to effectively research and present their findings. They need to draw attention to issues and events of news value and give voice to the voiceless that are marginalized.
Pointing out the official negligence or incompetence, explaining social, political or economic trends, scrutinizing the work of huge corporations or the government, international or national happenings, all comes under the wheelhouse of a reporter.
A reporter also has responsibility towards the news organization they are a part of. They are required to follow the character, style, guidelines and policy of the news organization.
For both cases they must adhere to journalistic professionalism, ethics and code of conduct. Fairness, balance, brevity and accuracy are some important ethical standards to maintain.
Within the same lines comes the reporter’s responsibilities towards the sources. Maintaining confidentiality, respecting embargo and giving proper attributions are some musts to follow through.
