Journalism in the true sense is what states facts and credible information with no sensationalism and exaggeration of information and so did Mahatama Gandhi believed.
Mahatma Gandhi started writing and editing for newspapers in the 1900s. Few are the examples of his contribution in journalism:- Indian Opinion, Navjivan and Young India. He always believed in the path of truth (Satyagraha) and that is why he wanted the public to obtain true information.
Gandhi believed that journalism should be used to serve the public, not to earn a living. He wrote that the sole aim of journalism should be service. He wanted to educate and aware the public through his writings about satyagraha, vegetarian food, festivals, and cultural and religious occasions.
Nowadays, Advertisements are the most visible thing in a newspaper but Gandhi opposed the idea of printing advertisements in newspapers because he believed that they could mislead people and promote materialism. He felt that advertisements often exaggerated claims to manipulate people into buying things they didn’t need, which went against his philosophy of simplicity and self-reliance. For Gandhi, the commercialization of the press was a threat to its independence and social responsibility.
