SUHANI

I can still vividly recall the sweet and memorable jingle of the TV show “Mowgli” – ‘Jungle, Jungle Baat Chali hai’ – which still echoes in my memory. Whether it was waking up early in the morning to catch Mickey Mouse clubhouse or arguing with my sister about which show to watch, be it hers or mine, television was an integral part of my life.
As a member of Generation Z, born in 2005, my childhood was filled with iconic TV shows such as Teletubbies, Gali Gali Sim sim, Mickey Mouse, Power Rangers, and Shakti Maan instead of Cocomelon. Television was my first source of visual entertainment. As I grew up, my taste in TV shows shifted from ‘kids” to ‘entertainment’ and then to ‘infotainment’. I still remember the days when I used to rush back home from school, throw away my bag and my socks, jump and sit on the couch, switch the TV on, and turn to my favorite show, TMKOC.
My mother tells me that In the past, daily soap operas such as Kahani, Ghar Ghar Ki, Vikram Betal, and Alibaba Chalis Chor were popular and watched in almost every household with great devotion. They were the talk of the town and brought families together. Today, things are not much different. Television remains the medium that unites families in a single room. Whether it is reality shows like Indian Idol, India’s Got Talent, or Super Dancer, Saturday and Sunday dinners are more enjoyable when the whole family is together. Watching TV together is one of the few things that can make us feel connected and bring the feeling of togetherness home.
The launch of Chandrayaan 3 was a big event, but not everyone could witness it directly from the space station. Thankfully, television came to the rescue. It allowed us to watch the launch as a family under one roof, and we all felt proud of India’s achievement. Indian cricket matches also have a huge following, with TV viewers being just as excited as live spectators. During the lockdown period, Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan brought back good memories for our grandparents and allowed them to relive the past.
Television is a significant part of everyone’s memories. It has been the most successful media tool in sustaining its popularity to date. Despite the arrival of OTT platforms, cable channels have not lost their appeal. It is unlikely that the fame of TV is going to fade anytime soon, and it will continue to be popular for many years to come.
