The television, today, is omnipresent. It is hard to imagine our lives without it. Being part of a generation that grew up with this revolutionary invention, it is not just a source of entertainment and information for me but also a common experience that links my life to those in different parts of the country and around the world.
I would elaborate upon the role that the television has played in my life through a very wholesome anecdote. I was in fifth grade, when my school decided to hold an online student exchange programme. As part of this programme, my class had gotten the chance to interact with students from Germany. During this interaction, we had a brief discussion about the movies and cartoons that we like in our respective countries. I mentioned how one of my favourite cartoon shows at the time was ‘Pokemon’ and as soon as I uttered this name, most of the students across the screen started to smile with familiarity. This was a major ice breaker and it made me realise that I had something in common with people who lived 4000 miles away from me. Thus, it becomes very clear that millions of people, spread thousands of miles apart, share the same experiences through television. Television is an example of the way in which technology and society intertwine.
With time, television has diversified into an all-encompassing media platform. It is capable of showcasing anything and everything known to mankind. From cartoons to news channels and reality shows to educational TV- there is something for everyone. As far as I’m concerned, I have been a massive admirer of cartoons as well as movies. For me, the television had replaced theatres and cinema halls a long time ago. Lastly, I have always been encouraged by my parents to cultivate a habit of watching the news but for some reason I find it hard to do. Maybe because the sensationalised and overly dramatised mode of presentation (of most news channels) has never been appealing to me. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoy the luxury of choice that television offers.
