The word ‘Doordarshan’, today seems to evoke a deep nostalgia for simpler times. “We’d wait all day just to watch one programme of our choice”, said my mom, when I asked her about her memories of Doordarshan. She reminisced about the typical theme song of the channel that still has the capability to make her emotional. As a news channel, credibility is the USP of Doordarshan. Even in today’s age of breaking news, Doordarshan has been able to maintain its tradition of providing accurate and up-to-date information to its viewers.
My parents were all praises for the innumerable shows (exclusive to the channel) that have continued to enthrall audiences over decades. The Ramayana, Mahabharat, Hum Log, Buniyad, Malgudi Days, Udaan and many more shows have been immortalized because of their content that has stood the test of time. Doordarshan has been providing content to generations of viewers and continues to contribute towards enriching India’s social fabric.During the covid lockdown, Doordarshan touched new records in terms of viewership. During the lockdown, old iconic serials were re-broadcasted on DD National and DD Bharati.
Thus, the channel has been binding the entire country together by telecasting a diverse range of events and shows. Doordarshan epitomizes honest and to the point journalism, which is the need of the hour.
