Growing up, my mornings were filled with the familiar hum of the radio, my father tuning in to the latest news as we drove for school. The static sound gave way to voices that felt like friends, keeping us connected to the world beyond our small home. In an age where news travels at the speed of a tweet, many question the relevance of radio. Undoubtedly radio remains an intimate medium, providing a sense of companionship in a way that impersonal algorithms never can.
Its importance stems from several irreplaceable attributes, all of which underscore its continued relevance today
For any age group, radio is a storyteller’s dream—where tone, silence, and pauses create a narrative as powerful as any visual medium. It captures raw emotion, paints images with sound, and reaches places where the internet struggles. In a world driven by change, radio offers something rare: a human connection that cuts through the noise.
At the heart of radio’s magic lies its intimacy—the ability to cultivate a deeply personal connection between the speaker and the listener. Without the distraction of visuals, the human voice emerges as the most compelling tool, resonating with a warmth and immediacy that other media often struggle to replicate. Radio’s importance also lies in its role as a democratic platform, giving a voice to the voiceless and a stage to the marginalised section.
The best example for the same can be “krishi darshan” a section segment of Doordarshan which is the longest running television series in India and raise awareness towards the plight of farmers and their necessities being broadcasted to 80 villages close to Delhi.Its low production costs and wide accessibility have allowed grassroots movements, local artists, and community voices to flourish, nurturing diversity in content that is often sidelined in mainstream media.
In an age obsessed with trends, we should remember that relevance isn’t about being new; it’s about being meaningful. And radio, in its quiet, consistent way, still has plenty to say.
