The phrase “TV, an idiot box” is a colloquial expression used to express the idea that television is an intellectually unstimulating, thus, unproductive and mentally draining form of entertainment, implying people who watch TV indulge in a useless activity.
Many prominent researchers have spoken up on the influence of television and the importance of monitoring content. One of them being Albert Bandura, a Canadian-American psychologist, who is known for his social learning theory and his famous Bobo doll experiment, which is a great example of how TV influences one’s behavior and attitude towards life. People mindlessly believe what they see on TV and curb themselves from questioning, further reducing their analytical thinking. Thus, it is imperative to keep a check on what you watch or you might just be an idiot watching a box.
