3G,4G,5G, and now 6G? The world is headed towards an internet evolution, and so is the new-age Journalism.
Internet boosts the advent of citizen journalism and independent journalists by connecting people online, especially through blogs and social media sites. It provides fast access to information, connection with the global masses, and usage of multimedia like videos, photographs, etc. along with providing 24/7 access to news which for some may result in information overload and thus cause burnout and stress.
The Internet is an integral part of journalism nowadays however it has a few drawbacks like it reduces the integrity of news as everyone on the Internet can become a ‘bearer and sharer’ of news resulting in fake news. Sensationalism and eye-catching headlines have become a norm online, reducing people’s attention spans as they now like to glance through the headlines and not read entire articles. It has also resulted in cases where the personal information about the victim, in a serious case, was shared, which ideally should be kept hidden.
Thus, the internet is not just a boon but also a bane for journalism.
