In 2005, the Right to Information Act was passed. This law increases the accountability and responsibility of the government and its employees while granting Indian residents the right to request any information from a Public authority.
The act is extensively used by citizens and media to unveil corruption, progress in government work, expenses related information, etc.
Exposes corruption: Citizens can find out about corruption by gaining access to information regarding government contracts, tenders, and spending.
Keeps check on the government: RTI can be used to keep tabs on how government initiatives are being carried out and make sure the intended recipients of benefits are receiving them.
Requesting information on matters of public interest: People have the right to request information on a range of topics, including education, infrastructure development, public health, and environmental challenges.
