Television is undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions of the last century. It is not only a source of continuous entertainment and news but also provides useful information on various subjects. It is, therefore, quite strange that almost universally, it is called the idiot box? Does it mean to convey that only idiots watch TV or does it imply that those who watch TV become idiots? There may be only a subtle difference between the two interpretations, but either way, why has TV become irrevocably associated with idiots?
The term idiot box has been used to refer to a TV set in a derogatory manner since the late 1950s. The name has stuck for two reasons:
a) TV has been a non interactive device that dulls the minds of those who watch it.
b) It promotes a sedentary lifestyle and diminishes the imaginative power of the minds of those who watch it continuously.
In depth research has been conducted in this regard. In a study conducted by Herbert Krugman in 1969, it has been found out that left hemisphere of our brain is responsible for processing information logically and analytically, but by watching television it goes out of tune.
Book writer Stephen King believes that watching television kills creativity. Many say it shuts down critical thinking. The noise emitted from screens is so mesmerising to kids that it captures their attention entirely separating them from people around.
Even adults can’t escape the magnetic charm of the idiot box. Excessive TV viewing is contributing to sleep problem, behaviour problems, obesity, laziness, and leads to several health issues.
Hence we need to recognize that in spite of the revolution, the television has brought about, we need to be weary of the damages it is capable of causing.
